Tournament Format

PGL Wallachia Season 8 uses a Swiss group stage format with 16 invited teams — no qualifiers. The top eight advance to a double-elimination playoff bracket. All group stage matches are Bo3. Playoffs are Bo3 throughout with the grand final played as Bo5. No team is eliminated on the first day of playoff play — all eight survivors start from the upper bracket.

The Swiss format rewards consistency over a single big performance — teams accumulate wins against progressively stronger opponents, meaning form across the group stage is a reliable indicator of playoff readiness.

Tundra Esports — Favourites With a Catch

Tundra Esports won ESL One Birmingham comprehensively — undefeated through the tournament, defeating Team Yandex 3-1 in the grand final. Their carry Ivan “Pure” Moskalenko is however absent for the group stage due to visa processing issues — the same problem that affected him at Wallachia Season 7. Alik “V-Tune” Vorobey is standing in, a Ukrainian carry with Tier 1 experience from Virtus.pro and Aurora Gaming who actually played at Wallachia Season 7 himself.

The question isn’t whether Tundra are the best team — they clearly are. It’s whether the stand-in situation on a brand new patch (7.41b, which significantly overhauled the meta by removing Facets entirely) creates enough uncertainty to push their odds to value territory for their rivals. If Pure rejoins for playoffs, Tundra remain the team to beat. If they struggle in groups, the bracket could open up considerably.

Team Yandex — Defending Champions, Motivated

Team Yandex won PGL Wallachia Season 7 and arrive as defending champions. They have been the second-most consistent team in the scene this season — consistently finishing as runner-up to Tundra at Birmingham and BLAST Slam V, but never quite closing the deal. Wallachia is the event where they’ve already proved they can win at the highest level. With home-patch knowledge (Watson and Noticed are both highly experienced on the current meta) and the motivation of a home tournament defence, Yandex are the clearest challenger to Tundra.

Team Liquid — Quietly Dangerous

Liquid had a shaky start to the season before recovering with a BLAST Slam VI win in February. They’ve been consistent since, posting multiple podium finishes. They enter Wallachia as a genuine dark horse — not expected to win outright but capable of reaching the final and causing problems for Tundra or Yandex if they hit their peak form.

Team Spirit — Weakened

Team Spirit are without star offlaner Magomed “Collapse” Khalilov due to personal reasons, with Bohdan “Batyuk” Batiuk standing in. Spirit have been unconvincing since the roster change. A top-half group stage finish is possible but a deep playoff run looks unlikely without their key player.

Team Falcons — Reigning World Champions, Off Form

Team Falcons won The International 2025 but have had a difficult spring season. They remain dangerous — world champions don’t forget how to play — but this hasn’t been their tournament cycle. Worth monitoring if they show signs of a form return.

Xtreme Gaming — High Ceiling, Low Floor

Xtreme Gaming are the most unpredictable team in the field. Runner-up at TI 2025, third at ESL One Birmingham — their peak is elite level. But their inconsistency means a group stage exit is nearly as plausible as a deep run. High variance plays for those comfortable with that profile.

The New Patch Factor

Patch 7.41 and its follow-up 7.41b represent one of the most significant meta changes in recent Dota 2 history — the complete removal of Facets, a mechanic that had defined drafting strategy for over a year. Teams that adapt fastest to the new meta often outperform their pre-tournament rankings at the first major post-patch event.

This creates genuine uncertainty even around the favourites. Tundra’s dominance at Birmingham was partly built on their Facets mastery. PARIVISION, who won PREMIER SERIES 1 shortly after 7.41 dropped, may have a patch-adaptation edge that isn’t fully reflected in their odds.
